SealLine Waterproof Case

5 stars!

seallineThe SealLine range of waterproof cases represents a great way of waterproofing your valuable gear in adverse conditions. With prices ranging from £15 upwards it isn't cheap, but neither are any of the competitors, and it will most certainly keep the wet out. The cases come in a variety of sizes, designed to fit a range of electronic items, and are designed to allow their easy use whilst still in the bag - perfect for phones, video cameras, and MP3 players.

The bags are constructed from a tough 600D polyurethane coated polyester with a multi-layer laminate window: strong, tough, and see-through. They are closed with a "SealLock" closure, roughly equivalent to a highly reinforced sandwich bag closing, which is very effective, easy to use and durable, despite my initial reservations. SealLine states that they are submersible for up to 30 minutes in 1 metre of water - although I didn't test for this long, a short bath showed no leaks or issues.

Another excellent feature was the lash points, which allow these bags to be easily connected to other objects, or indeed yourself, ensuring they can never get far. The window material allowed only slightly impaired use of the items inside, and minimal restriction of the audio - an excellent advantage. Even better was their compatibility with touch-screens, allowing phones, iPads, and the like to all be operated whilst in the waterproof bag. Some models come with headphone connectors, allowing you to listen to these devices via the 3.5mm jack whilst still maintaining the seal.

The only disadvantage is the type of protection offered: the cases only provide protection from the wet, and not from drops and falls, so don't compare to something like a Peli Micro case - which, although more expensive, will comprehensively protect, albeit without being able to use the device. It's a compromise between usability and protection, and in this case SealLine has stuck with usability - a great choice for cadets who probably won't be testing these to the absolute limit.
